emoc - 11 Sep 2007:
<p />
Hi Arthur, it looks &amp; sounds nice! I tried to run the demo application on windows XP, but it seems there are some troubles : the sounds are not loaded (perhaps because of the semi-colon in the full path), so the chuckdemo.ck scripts.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

Arthur Clemens - 12 Sep 2007:
<p />
On windows somehow the chuck file does not get called. I am investigating the issue.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

Arthur Clemens - 15 Sep 2007:
<p />
I have updated the demo - now it works on Windows as well.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

OSX - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
here's what it looks like when i run it:
 <span class="foswikiAlert">Error: can't fetch image from 'http://metaph.org/temp/ProcessingAndChuckDemo.png': 500 Can't connect to metaph.org:80 (Bad hostname)</span>
<p />
blank window is the demo app. of course when it's selected it says something more like ChuckPlayFileDemo instead of Activity Monitor
<p />
note the values for memory. it's clearly doing something. just not showing me anything. this is under 10.4.10.
<p />
sure i don't need processing installed.
<p />
if i'm supposed to do anything besides install chuck (which works and is accessible from the command line (though not installed in /usr/bin if thats where you need it to be), i don't know about that. the demo app is installed in /Applications.
<p />
% java -version
java version "1.5.0_07"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.5.0_07-164)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)
<p />
<hr />
<p />

you can ignore this line: - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
of course when it's selected it says something more like VisibleArea.ChuckPlayFileDemo instead of Activity Monitor
<p />
forgot i cropped it out.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

this demo is working now - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
turns out it was that assumption that i could put chuck anywhere accessible from the command line (via a changed path) that was afoul. note the requirement that chuck be installed in /usr/bin for this demo to work!
<p />
thanks arthur. look forward to messing about with this more. do you have any clue what the breakdown of cpu usage between processing and chuck is in this demo? my machine (1.5 Ghz PPC) is devoting between 20 and 30 percent CPU to this demo right now... (note: no judgement attached to that statement. just info porn)
<p />
<p />
<hr />
<p />

watson - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
clarification: i noticed that ChucK is actually running as a separate process from the demo thread (which presumably includes all the Processing stuff). on my machine (stats above) the former is using up around 35% CPU while the latter, as I said above is ~20-30%. just for comparison, if i run "chuck otf_05.ck otf_01.ck otf_03.ck otf_04 otf_02.ck" (five chuck thread in parallel producing about the same sonic complexity) from the chuck examples page i see a CPU of ~15%.

<p />
Hi Arthur, it looks &amp; sounds nice! I tried to run the demo application on windows XP, but it seems there are some troubles : the sounds are not loaded (perhaps because of the semi-colon in the full path), so the chuckdemo.ck scripts.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

Arthur Clemens - 12 Sep 2007:
<p />
On windows somehow the chuck file does not get called. I am investigating the issue.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

Arthur Clemens - 15 Sep 2007:
<p />
I have updated the demo - now it works on Windows as well.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

OSX - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
here's what it looks like when i run it:
 <span class="foswikiAlert">Error: can't fetch image from 'http://metaph.org/temp/ProcessingAndChuckDemo.png': 500 Can't connect to metaph.org:80 (Bad hostname)</span>
<p />
blank window is the demo app. of course when it's selected it says something more like ChuckPlayFileDemo instead of Activity Monitor
<p />
note the values for memory. it's clearly doing something. just not showing me anything. this is under 10.4.10.
<p />
sure i don't need processing installed.
<p />
if i'm supposed to do anything besides install chuck (which works and is accessible from the command line (though not installed in /usr/bin if thats where you need it to be), i don't know about that. the demo app is installed in /Applications.
<p />
% java -version
java version "1.5.0_07"

Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.5.0_07-87, mixed mode, sharing)
<p />
<hr />
<p />

you can ignore this line: - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
of course when it's selected it says something more like VisibleArea.ChuckPlayFileDemo instead of Activity Monitor
<p />
forgot i cropped it out.
<p />
<hr />
<p />

this demo is working now - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
turns out it was that assumption that i could put chuck anywhere accessible from the command line (via a changed path) that was afoul. note the requirement that chuck be installed in /usr/bin for this demo to work!
<p />
thanks arthur. look forward to messing about with this more. do you have any clue what the breakdown of cpu usage between processing and chuck is in this demo? my machine (1.5 Ghz PPC) is devoting between 20 and 30 percent CPU to this demo right now... (note: no judgement attached to that statement. just info porn)
<p />
<p />
<hr />
<p />

watson - 03 Nov 2007:
<p />
clarification: i noticed that ChucK is actually running as a separate process from the demo thread (which presumably includes all the Processing stuff). on my machine (stats above) the former is using up around 35% CPU while the latter, as I said above is ~20-30%. just for comparison, if i run "chuck otf_05.ck otf_01.ck otf_03.ck otf_04 otf_02.ck" (five chuck thread in parallel producing about the same sonic complexity) from the chuck examples page i see a CPU of ~15%.

Jeff - 07 May 2009:
<p />
&#34;Stop letting people work alone on a task. Leverage their differences. Make them see your vision. Let them define their shared goal and make them responsible, together.&#34;
<p />
You couldn&#39;t be more right. It&#39;s diversity and mutual appreciation thereof which may lead to synthesis and symbiosis. It&#39;s my opinion that theory and methods are only useful when treated as a philosophy, a mindset rather than a strict way of executing ideas. The history of individuals it too complex to generalize creative processes into a static framework, which ultimately constrains creaivity rather than streamlining it. Evolution, the process of accumulation, trial and error, is my personal inspiration for designing things. Unfortunately, this state of mind is often misunderstood.
<p />
Collaboration &#62; competition, Creation &#62; production, Flow &#62; method.

<h2>  Help on Preferences </h2> <ul>
<li> A <em>preference setting</em> lets you define a simple macro that can be expanded in your output. Preference settings do not accept any parameters.
</li> <li> A preference setting looks like this: <br /> <code>3 or 6 spaces * Set NAME = value</code> <br /> Example:   <pre class="tml">   &#42; Set WEBBGCOLOR &#61; #FFFFC0</pre>
</li> <li> A preferences setting can be disabled with a # sign. Remove the # sign to enable a local customisation. Example:<br />   <pre class="tml">   &#42; #Set DENYWEBCHANGE &#61; &#37;USERSWEB&#37;.UnknownUser</pre>
</li> <li> Macros defined using preference settings are expanded by enclosing the name in percent signs. Example: <ul>
<li> When you write <code>%WEBBGCOLOR%</code>, it gets expanded to <code>#B9DAFF</code>
</li></ul>
</li> <li> You can introduce your own preference settings and use them in your topics and templates.
</li> <li> A preference settings is always taken from the most current topic revision, even when accessing previous revisions of a topic.
</li> <li> Preferences can be defined in a number of places: <ol>
<li> System.DefaultPreferences (Foswiki upgrades overwrite this topic)
</li> <li> Main.SitePreferences
</li> <li> Sub-webs inherit the WebPreferences of their parent
</li> <li> WebPreferences
</li> <li> In user topics, if the user has one (yours is Main.WikiGuest)
</li> <li> In (some) plugin documentation topics
</li> <li> In the topic being accessed
</li></ol>
</li></ul>
<p />
<blockquote class="foswikiHelp"> <code>Set</code> statements which occur at higher-numbered locations override settings of the same name at lower numbered levels, <em>unless the macro was listed in a FINALPREFERENCES setting (finalised) at a lower-numbered level.</em> In this case, the macro is locked to the value at that level; <code>Set</code> statements at higher-numbered levels are ignored.</blockquote>
<p />
If you are setting a preference and using it in the same topic, note that Foswiki reads all the preference settings from the saved version of the topic before it displays anything. This means you can use a macro anywhere in the topic, even if you set it somewhere inconspicuous near the end. <strong>But beware:</strong> it also means that if you change the setting of a macro you are using in the same topic, <code><b>Preview</b></code> will show the wrong thing, and you must <code><b>Save</b></code> the topic to see it correctly.
<p />
Also note that Foswiki always reads the setting from the most current topic revision, so viewing older revisions of a topic can show unexpected results.
<p />
The syntax for setting macros is the same anywhere: <br /> <code>[multiple of 3 spaces] * [space] Set [space] MACRONAME [space] = [space] value</code>
<p />
<strong>Examples:</strong>
<pre class="tml">
   &#42; Set MACRONAME &#61; value
      &#42; Set MACRONAME &#61; value
</pre>
Spaces between the = sign and the value will be ignored. You can split a value over several lines by indenting following lines with spaces - as long as you don't try to use * as the first character on the following line.
<p />
<strong>Example:</strong>
<pre class="tml">   &#42; Set MACRONAME &#61; value starts here
     and continues here
</pre>
<p />
Whatever you include in your Macro will be expanded on display, exactly as if it had been entered directly.
<p />
<strong>Example: Create a custom logo macro</strong> <br /> <ul>
<li> To place a logo anywhere in a web by typing <code><b>%MYLOGO%</b></code>, define the preference settings on the web's System.WebPreferences topic, and upload a logo file, ex: <code>mylogo.gif</code>. You can upload by attaching the file to WebPreferences, or, to avoid clutter, to any other topic in the same web, e.g. <code>LogoTopic</code>. Sample preference setting in WebPreferences:
</li></ul>
<pre class="tml">   &#42; Set MYLOGO &#61; &#37;PUBURL&#37;/&#37;WEB&#37;/LogoTopic/mylogo.gif</pre>
<p />

<h3>  Access Control Settings </h3>
<p />
These are special types of preference settings to control access to content. System.AccessControl explains these security settings in detail.
<p />
<h3> Local values for preferences </h3>
Certain topics (user, plugin, web, site and default preferences topics) have a problem; macros defined in those topics can have two meanings. For example, consider a user topic. A user may want to use a double-height edit box when they are editing their home topic - but <strong>only</strong> when editing their home topic. The rest of the time, they want to have a normal edit box. This separation is achieved using <code>Local</code> in place of <code>Set</code> in the macro definition. For example, if the user sets the following in their home topic:
<pre class="tml">
   &#42; Set EDITBOXHEIGHT &#61; 10
   &#42; Local EDITBOXHEIGHT &#61; 20
</pre>
Then, when they are editing any other topic, they will get a 10 high edit box. However, when they are editing their home topic they will get a 20 high edit box.
<code>Local</code> can be used wherever a preference needs to take a different value depending on where the current operation is being performed.
<p />
Use this powerful feature with great care! <code>%ALLVARIABLES%</code> can be used to get a listing of the values of all macros in their evaluation order, so you can see macro scope if you get confused.

<p />
&#34;Stop letting people work alone on a task. Leverage their differences. Make them see your vision. Let them define their shared goal and make them responsible, together.&#34;
<p />
<p />

</li></ol>
</li></ul>
<p />
<p />
<p />
Also note that Foswiki always reads the setting from the most current topic revision, so viewing older revisions of a topic can show unexpected results.
<p />
The syntax for setting macros is the same anywhere: <br /> <code>[multiple of 3 spaces] * [space] Set [space] MACRONAME [space] = [space] value</code>
<p />
<strong>Examples:</strong>
<pre class="tml">
   &#42; Set MACRONAME &#61; value
      &#42; Set MACRONAME &#61; value
</pre>
Spaces between the = sign and the value will be ignored. You can split a value over several lines by indenting following lines with spaces - as long as you don't try to use * as the first character on the following line.
<p />
<strong>Example:</strong>
<pre class="tml">   &#42; Set MACRONAME &#61; value starts here
     and continues here
</pre>
<p />
Whatever you include in your Macro will be expanded on display, exactly as if it had been entered directly.
<p />
<p />
You can also set preference settings in a topic by clicking the link <code>Edit topic preference settings</code> under <code>More topic actions</code>. Preferences set in this manner are known as 'meta' preferences and are not visible in the topic text, but take effect nevertheless.
<p />
<h3>  Access Control Settings </h3>
<p />

<p />
<h3> Local values for preferences </h3>

A user may want to use a double-height edit box when they are editing their home topic - but <strong>only</strong> when editing their home topic. The rest of the time, they want to have a normal edit box. This separation is achieved using <code>Local</code> in place of <code>Set</code> in the macro definition. For example, if the user sets the following in their home topic:
<pre class="tml">
   &#42; Set EDITBOXHEIGHT &#61; 10
   &#42; Local EDITBOXHEIGHT &#61; 20
</pre>
Then, when they are editing any other topic, they will get a 10 high edit box. However, when they are editing their home topic they will get a 20 high edit box.
<code>Local</code> can be used wherever a preference needs to take a different value depending on where the current operation is being performed.
